What I Use, Part 1: At the Office

Between my job and my personal life, I use a wide variety of different technologies day to day. Some of it works well, some of it I use just because I think it’s cool, and some of it gets used just because it’s there. I’m going to start off with my work setup. I administrate a random assortment of systems, so I think it’s fitting that I use one of everything to keep on top of it all.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft released their new free antivirus product, Microsoft Security Essentials last Tuesday. Being the sucker for new software and gadgets that I am, I immediately installed it on a couple systems to check it out.

A bit of history is in order, perhaps. For the last several years I’ve recommended (and used) the free version of AVG to do my antivirusing. The main draw is the free part, but in the free version was a really simple auto-updater and scheduler that was fairly unobtrusive during day to day use. However, in the last couple versions they’ve started to push the up sell to their full security product, and made it more difficult to find and download the free one.
